Spline is not here to compete with Meshy or Rodin to generate production game assets. Instead, it is in an entirely different space. Spline is an interactive 3D web design tool.
An animated 3D object you'll see on the homepage of a SaaS tool (perhaps you can spin it) or used as some cool effect when moving the mouse on a portfolio website.
The AI feature in Spline allows you to generate various shapes, materials, and scene components from textual input right inside the Spline design app. Spline's main audience is web designers as well as no-code users who want to feature 3D elements on their website and do not want to learn Blender or Three. js. You can type a description of the 3D element, you can create one using the design tool, customise and style it, then export an embed code to place the result onto your website, complete with realistic physics and particle systems. Collaboration is similar to Figma, where more than one person is present in the same space.
Let me mention honestly here, Spline is not a 3D asset generator but a 3D design tool.
If you need GLB and FBX for a game engine or for animation, you will not succeed using Spline. The 3D elements created via Spline AI are high-quality design elements intended for the web but will require a lot of work before use as a game-ready model (no UVs, no PBR materials yet, no proper export). Exports are limited to the web.
Spline offers a truly functional freemium option. You'd be able to build and host an interactive 3D experience for yourself using the freemium version of the product. Most of the products in this niche with a freemium version barely limit this functionality.

Pros & Cons
Pros
- Purpose-built for web-based interactive 3D design which is a genuinely underserved use case that game-asset tools do not cover
- Free plan includes publishing which allows complete interactive 3D web projects to go live without any payment
- Figma-style real-time collaboration makes it practical for design teams rather than solo use only
- React and Next.js integration connects Spline to developer workflows for building interactive 3D product UI and marketing pages
- No code required to create physics-reactive and scroll-driven 3D experiences for websites
Cons
- Not a game asset tool — outputs are web formats rather than GLB FBX or OBJ files suitable for game engines or animation software
- AI generation quality within Spline is a starting point rather than a finished design requiring refinement in the editor after generation
- Less suited to photorealistic rendering needs compared to dedicated 3D render tools with higher material fidelity
- Monthly subscription at $14.99 per month is required for removing Spline watermark from published scenes
