Pixlr is old school. Many of you probably used Canva before, and it was back then that it was the go-to browser-based Photoshop replacement. As of 2026, it has maintained its status while also integrating AI throughout its primary editor. Pixlr E is the professional version, offering blending modes, layers, curves, levels, and the whole kit for complex photo retouching. Pixlr X is designed for easier quick editing. Both options run in your browser, and this continues to be the biggest advantage of Pixlr; the need for no installation or systems requirements means no compatibility issues across any computer. Over the past couple of years, AI capabilities have been added, such as automatic background removal, one-click enhancements, generative fill for filling areas of an image or extending it, and a face-aware portrait feature. The Generative AI feature is called GenAI Replace, where you can select an area and define how to fill or replace the area, similar to Photoshop's Generative Fill (though free with daily limitations). The Free tier is the most generous browser editor for actual photo editing, allowing free use of the majority of its features with daily limits instead of locking the features behind a paywall. However, this might not be perfect for you since, as previously mentioned, this is a complex product with a density of tools, which can make the editor feel crowded, especially on Pixlr E. The user interface can look intimidating for users accustomed to Canva's clean and minimalistic interface, so there may be some time to figure out what to do. For students, freelancers, and those needing a browser-based photo editor that provides advanced features instead of pre-made templates, Pixlr E has to be one of the most effective free options on the market.
