NovelAI draws a different type of user—the one who wants an AI to help them write in powerful ways but without the paranoia that all their chapter-by-chapter output is forming a training dataset for their platform. NovelAI's data is encrypted client-side before going up to their servers. This means they absolutely cannot read what's in your stories, even if they wanted to. If you're working on a personal or sensitive creative project, that privacy model is of paramount importance in a way it just isn't on most competitive platforms. Long-form writers will find themselves returning again and again to a feature called Lorebook, where you build up entries for your characters, places, magical systems, factions, and so on; if Novel AI detects keywords from these entries, the AI automatically references them. This allows you to maintain consistency with a protagonist's eye color and a given region's political map over the hundreds of pages without manually cross-referencing all that stuff. Plus, the specialized literary-trained AI models in Novel AI perform better than generic AI trained on all sorts of random crap from around the web at emulating genre fiction and artistic prose. And if you create worlds with compelling visual elements (characters, landscapes, magical totems, etc.), you can do it in-app with NAI Diffusion V4, which lets writers generate characters and reference images right inside the story editor. Novel AI's one major Achilles' heel is polish; most of the independent comparisons that I've read rank the prose polish below what Sudowrite (especially the fiction-dedicated model) offers. Subscriptions to NovelAI start at $10 a month for access to both the AI writing tool and image generator.
