There is a reason Copilot is listed where it is; its distinctiveness really sets it apart from the other chatbots on this list. It’s not so much an independent AI assistant you’ll just open up in another browser tab. Instead, it is the AI layer built directly into Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint, and Edge. The AI can appear right inside the place you are already working. If you are part of an organization that uses Microsoft 365, this actually matters quite a lot. When you instruct Copilot to write a response to someone in Outlook based on previous context and previous messages, explain an Excel spreadsheet in terms of a given formula, or summarize meeting notes in Teams, your Copilot is able to work with your organizational data because of access provided by Microsoft Graph. Copilot at copilot.microsoft.com offers unlimited image creation (DALL-E), a more generous than average free tier in this area. However, the quality of this copilot when run independently is less impressive when compared with Claude and ChatGPT in many of the same comparisons. Rather than its raw chatbot capabilities, Copilot’s greatest value comes from the depth with which it is integrated into work workflows. However, it is important to note this: the full Copilot integration capability within M365 applications costs $30 per user per month in addition to current M365 license plans, which greatly increases costs. Copilot found in Edge and Windows is the “preview” product and only hints at the capability one encounters when they reach the “paid” level within an enterprise.
