Duolingo Max

Duolingo Max

The language app you already know, now with AI conversation practice that actually pushes you to speak instead of just tap.

If you have used Duolingo before, Max is the version that finally takes it past the beginner stage. The free app is great for building habits and picking up basics, but it never really forces you to have an actual conversation. Max changes that with two AI-powered features built on GPT-4. Roleplay drops you into real-life scenarios—ordering coffee, booking a hotel, navigating an argument—and you have to respond naturally. Video Call lets you practice speaking with Lily, an AI character who reacts to what you say in real time. Another thing worth knowing: the Explain My Answer feature, which breaks down why your answer was wrong and teaches the grammar behind it, became free for all users in January 2026. So what you are really paying for at the Max tier is the conversation practice. One honest downside—it currently supports only seven languages, so if you are learning something like Mandarin or Arabic, you are out of luck for now. That said, for Spanish, French, or Japanese learners who want more than passive drills, it is a genuinely useful step up.
