Descript Overdub is voice cloning that is just trying not to get in the way. Descript isn’t using it to churn out long hours of new content. The intended use is for you to avoid re-recording, correcting your mistakes after the fact-you read a phrase, hit a wrong word, type the correct word in the transcript and Descript resynthesizes the word, even the phrase in your clone voice, seamlessly enough to be undetectable in the output file. And for podcasters and YouTubers and creators of online classes – anyone creating big quantities of audio out loud – avoiding re-records can legitimately be the longest single, tortuous phase of post-production. The editing happens in the same editing workspace you’re already in. Training it requires recording. Descript-provided training phrases, about 15-30 minutes' worth, are intended to be sufficient variation to manage sentences fairly well. The Fill feature builds on the above, allowing you to slot in whole new sentences, not just word fixes, making content adaptable to update info in records without touching a mic. The big caveat, frankly: you train voice clones per Descript account, bound to it. Descript allows you to clone your voice but not to port it out. If you’re already cutting and editing in Descript, that’s going to be no impediment to overdubbing. Otherwise, if you want portable, self-contained cloned voice work, then you really should look elsewhere, including ElevenLabs.
