Craiyon began as DALL-E mini—a stripped-down open-source version that worked in the browser and blew up in 2022 after people realized they could make literally anything for free, with no login or signup required. The name has changed, the model has improved over the years, but the basic promise of Craiyon remains. It's free. There are no limits. You don't need an account. Even in 2026 this all still makes it undeniably useful for one very distinct kind of purpose. Brainstorming visual concepts. Testing out what an idea might look like with something lighter before diving into a more advanced AI image generation tool. Casual digital daydreaming and riffing. Craiyon does all this without asking for your credit card or email. Its interface can hardly be simpler: type something, hit generate, and get nine images. If you see something you like, great! If not, go back and try again. There's a free version where you can generate as much as you want, but expect to wait a little bit between generations. Paid tiers speed this up for you, get rid of the ads, and run things on private servers instead. Here's the thing that we need to be totally upfront about—the output isn't going to rival that of almost any of the paid AI art generation tools out there, no matter what the plan is. For a fraction of Midjourney, Leoardo, NightCafe, etc. The results generated will definitely be lower resolution and lower fidelity. None of this means Craiyon should be dismissed entirely, though—because its competitive advantage is the totally opposite one. Free, for everyone, forever. Access. No-friction generation. For trying out ideas quickly and messing around without thinking twice about it, Craiyon hits a spot on the dial that almost none of these other services really occupy.
