Clipchamp is Microsoft’s “what video editing should look like for the hundreds of millions who use Windows but haven’t ever launched video editing software.” It's available natively in Windows 11, in Chrome, and through Microsoft 365. Best of all, the free version offers up to 1080p exported clips with no watermarks, something many competitor apps offer at a paywall. It lands halfway between the simplicity of Canva and the powerfulness of Adobe Premiere Pro, and more towards the former in many ways, with drag-and-drop of assets into an editable timeline, ability to add text and transitions, and exportation of a finished clip possible during the first editing session. Launched in 2026, it features AI script help for Copilot alongside some visual framing with auto-capture, alongside captions and background replacement that supports both basic removal from single clicks and generation by a prompt with text-to-video thanks to Microsoft’s own Azure AI. A transparency note: early reports at late 2025 / early 2026 indicate that a sync-shift and migration from local to OneDrive storage was met with a few teething issues for some users - lost project files, duplicated files, and corrupted project links were shared and discussed in official Microsoft communities at the time of writing. It seems to be ironed out, but saving project files in an external backup location of your choosing still never hurt. If you’re looking for a free, perfectly competent editor that doesn't require downloading and installing special software (even for Windows natives), Clipchamp is the way you’ll want to begin.
