Once you see it, the premise for ChatGPT for Google is almost infuriatingly simple. You Google something, and an AI-powered response pops up in a panel next to the regular search results, on the right side. That’s it.
No opening up a new browser tab.
No pasting your search query into another application window. No switching contexts at all. The two responses sit side-by-side, which allows you to quickly compare a direct answer from an AI with the collective knowledge of the web—a function I found to be incredibly useful during brief, intensive research or fact-checking sessions. It also adds the capability to highlight any text on a given webpage, then have ChatGPT discuss it directly without ever leaving that page.
It’s very light on resources and doesn’t alter Google’s normal appearance or functionality, either.
Just be aware that it requires your own ChatGPT account and API key, so it’s not exactly one-click, but for any regular ChatGPT users who perform many Google searches throughout the day, it eliminates a genuinely tedious pain point.

Pros & Cons
Pros
- Dead simple concept that solves a real daily friction point for people who search Google and use ChatGPT regularly
- Lightweight and does not noticeably slow down Google or change how the search page looks
- Works across multiple search engines not just Google which makes it more versatile than the name suggests
- Completely free with no premium tier or usage limits beyond your OpenAI account limits
- Right-click Ask AI feature is a natural addition that feels like it should have always been there
Cons
- Requires a ChatGPT account and API key setup which adds friction for casual users who just want to install and go
- ChatGPT responses use your API credits so heavy search use can add up in costs depending on which model you are using
- Not an official OpenAI product so it depends on third-party maintenance and could break if OpenAI changes its API or interface
- The side panel can feel redundant for users who already have Sider or another AI sidebar extension installed since the functionality overlaps significantly
