There is probably one video editor that social content creators will inevitably end up using: CapCut. In many ways CapCut's recipe—a totally serviceable free tier packed with a vast array of effects and optimized for the kind of workflows required by short-form social video—explains why in 2025 it was the most downloaded video editing app on earth. CapCut is designed for short-form content. Its edited timeline is uncluttered and intuitive even for those new to the app, and it features a truly robust (and accurate!) set of auto captions, one-tap AI background replacement, and an extremely expansive selection of trending templates that is constantly updated with the latest formats. It has become so entrenched in social media work that even many professional social strategists say they default to using it to mock up ideas because the workflow is just that efficient for social media. A quick note: in the US, the app was yanked from app stores (iOS and Android) in January 2025 over the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act given ByteDance ownership. The most widely used video editor for social video was still unavailable from US app stores in mid-2026. While users in other parts of the world (Europe, Asia, Latin America, etc.) aren’t affected, as an existing installation, it may well still function. Those outside the U.S. Note the popular Pro plan of $9.99 a month includes an enormous amount of additional premium assets and up to 4K output as part of its offering. However, as noted before in this article, teams with significant data security/compliance needs should investigate how data collected by ByteDance in 2026 will be handled given concerns over Byte Dance ownership.
