Long before Artbreeder was Artbreeder (it started life as Ganbreeder and launched in 2018), and before most of us had heard of Stable Diffusion, was a platform that offered us our first real glimpse of creative, interactive AI-generated art, with no need for technical know-how. The idea behind it—and it's not changed much—was straightforward: start with two images, 'breed' them together with sliders, referred to as genes, and create something in between. Edit a face's age, expression, ethnicity, or artistic style simply by moving a gene, and watch the image change in front of your eyes. There was no prompt engineering. Nothing at all. That gene slider approach to breeding is, to this day, still what makes Artbreeder uniquely distinct. It fosters exploration in a way that prompting never could—you don't tell Artbreeder what to create; you discover it. 250 million images later (from over 10 million unique users), there's a massive library of images on the platform, waiting to be remixed and refined by the community. The more recently developed Collage and Composer features push it further toward the realm of text-to-image, but 'breeding' is still central to the identity of Artbreeder. There is, perhaps, one drawback in terms of image clarity and photo-realism: it doesn't even begin to compare to more recent tools such as Midjourney or Flux. It isn't a professional tool. The free plan offers 3 credits a month, which is really not much, so if you want to get a realistic feel for Artbreeder, you're going to have to bite the bullet and buy the $8.99 a month Plus plan. If you're just in it for the creative process itself and fancy something a bit more akin to discovery than transaction, though, I highly recommend Artbreeder.
