When AI Dungeon first arrived in 2019, it established the genre of mainstream AI-powered text adventure games. At its core, it's the same game: You tell it what your character is doing, and the AI tells you what happens next. There's no fixed narrative, no leveling system, and no predefined ending—the story can go in any direction and will follow you virtually anywhere. A medieval quest can devolve into a corporate thriller and a ghost story within a single gameplay session if your mind takes you there. This kind of unbounded creative freedom is what makes it so appealing, and it remains the best open-ended experience you can have in the genre when it comes to collaborative improv. On its paid tiers, the World Info tool helps ensure more continuity by allowing you to store facts about your characters and worlds, adding them to each generated text block that would otherwise only be constrained by the AI's context window. You can play in multiplayer with other users, each controlling their own adventurer within the same story. One weakness independent reviewers consistently mention, however, is the tendency for stories to drift over extended play sessions. Even the most advanced models will eventually create contradictory facts or lose the thread of complex plots. While it's an industry-wide issue, it's perhaps more noticeable in AI Dungeon than in other tools that offer more structured context control. Latitude released its dedicated Voyage creator platform in April 2021, designed for building your own AI RPG worlds, including a free Wanderer tier so you can evaluate it for yourself. Paid tiers are $14.99 per month and up.
