You probably already know the routine: record in a quiet room, use a proper microphone, and soundproof your space. Perfectly logical advice, for sure, but you don’t know that yet, do you? You set up an MP3 in your kitchen as a hot dog was sizzling; the microwave emitted its distinctive thrum, and you could hear the gurgle of an ancient Frigidaire. Not ideal. But fire that soundbite into Adobe Podcast’s Enhanced Speech, and suddenly a recorded thought previously doomed to the “out” folder miraculously sounds like it was produced in a $10,000 studio. This tool, combining what effectively is a free, simplified version of iZotope RX with its audio-sharpening algorithms, separates vocals from room ambience so effectively that a free, simplified version of iZotope RX with its audio-sharpening algorithms, separates vocals from room ambience so effectively it makes previously unheard snippets clear and prominent. And perhaps best of all? Unlike just about everything else on this list, Adobe's Enhanced Speech service isn’t part of any Creative Cloud subscription plan. No cost, no fee, period. All you need is the .wav or .mp3 file to process (up to 1 GB in size), and you’ll receive a pristine, clean .wav in return. Just one caveat: Enhanced Speech doesn’t allow you to tune individual processing parameters – it cleans “by its own will" and at times can give certain vocal tones a mildly robotic edge. That said, the results are consistently impressive, and for podcasters, journalists, educators creating courses, or virtually any audio creator working under or virtually any audio creator working with suboptimal circumstances, there is simply no quicker, easier way to make your audio usable for free than Adobe Podcast.
